Lorenzetto

Lorenzetto, also Lorenzo Lotti, Lorenzo Giovanni di Lorenzo di Lodovico di Lodovico and Guglielmo (* 1490 in Florence, † 1541 in Rome ) was an Italian architect and sculptor.

After some modest works in his hometown Lorenzetto left Florence and went to Pistoia, where he completed the unfinished tomb of Verrocchio Forteguerri. After that, he went to Rome. There he met Raphael, with whom he began to work. He created, composed Raffaello da Montelupos the famous statues of Elijah and Jonas for the niches of the Chigi Chapel in the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome. The head of Jonah was probably inspired by the antique statue of Antinous Farnese in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. For the same chapel and the bronze relief with the theme of Jesus and the Samaritan woman was born. In the niche above the grave of Raphael in the Pantheon stands his statue " Madonna del Sasso ". In a side chapel of the German national church of Santa Maria dell'Anima he created a copy of the Pieta by Michelangelo, which he, however, the model in some distinctive features so altered that the people seem less idealized. In his last years he worked as an architect in the construction of St. Peter's in Rome.
