Lorenzo Costa

Lorenzo Costa the Elder ( * 1460 in Ferrara, † March 5, 1535 in Mantua ), was an Italian painter.

Costa was in his hometown students the painter Cosimo Tura and Francesco del Cossa. 1483 settled down with Costa 23 years as an artist in Bologna. There he soon became a pupil and assistant of the painter Francesco Francia, of which he was also very affected.

Costa had in his art a kind of rough, realistic nature, which itself could not be influenced by Francia. Costa soon developed his own style, but always remained in the shadow of his teachers, since he lacked the inventiveness of those.
