Los, Sweden

Lot, older spelling: Loos, a town ( Tätort ) in the Swedish municipality Ljusdal is the part of the County of Gävleborg County. In the village live 387 persons ( 2010).

Lot is mostly known for the ore mine located here from the ore, the chemist Axel Frederic CRONSTEDT middle of the 18th century represented the first time the element nickel in pure form. The mining Master H. Kalmeter had begun in Los to dig for bismuth and cobalt, which was already recognized in 1735 by Georg Brandt as a separate metal. But put on the market for days ores did not give the typical cobalt deep blue color. CRONSTEDT examined on the ore accurate and discovered that the rock contained only small amounts of cobalt, but an unknown metal, which he gave the name Nickel. His discovery he described in his essay Rön och Försök, gjorda med en malmart från Los kobolt - grufvor ( " experiences and experiments on a cobalt ore from the mine in Los ", in Proceedings of the Swedish Academy of Sciences, 1751-1754 ).
