Work

Lothar Hempel works in his photographs and sculptures collected found images which dancers, performers as well as portraits of specific social groups show. Photographs of Pina Bausch's performances often appear, as prostitutes and cult figures of the film and the stage of the 1990. By Hempel selected their gestural expression and character, he also has a detachment from their social, personal, historical, etc. contexts, freeing them speak of their history and gives them new opportunities of development. This newly created characters, although they seem a bit strange, but wiederzukennen and thus arouse in the viewer certain associations.

The work of the artist in touch with other media systems in relation, in front of all theater, dance and film play an important role. The photographic collagen and sculptures relate to dream situations, his world of characters, shapes and colors adds Hempel in a certain attitude together and opens his work a stage-like presentation. The narrative associations and contradictions of the work aims at a state between consciousness and dream.
