Lough Ree

The Lough Ree ( Loch Rí Irish ) is a lake in the center of Ireland.

After Lough Derg, it is the second largest and medium-sized main lake over the Shannon. He is also one of the three major lakes, including the Shannon expands in its course. The other two lakes are Lough Allen to the north and to the Lough Derg to the south. There are also a number of smaller lakes in the River Shannon. The lake is nestled between the counties Longford, Westmeath and Roscommon.

The Lough Ree is popular with anglers and boaters. Accessible is from the Lough Ree Athlone at the south end of the lake, where a port is located, which leads to the lake. At the north end of the lake lies the small town of Lanesborough.

In the northern part of Lough Ree is the island Inchcleraun (Irish Inis Cloithrinn ), on which the remains of an early Christian monastery and churches are located. According to legend, said to have been killed on this island, the mythical queen Medb and her sister Clothru have owned a castle. Approximately in the middle of the west side of Lough Ree on the throat of between the northern and southern lake is Rindoon, a historic peninsula.

In the vicinity of the lake, there are many so-called mushroom stones, which are mushroom-shaped limestone rock formations, caused by flushing through the water.
