Louis Archinard

Louis Archinard ( born February 11, 1850 in Le Havre, † 8 May 1932 in Villiers- le -Bel ) was a French Général de division of Troisième République, which contributed decisively to the success of colonialism of France in West Africa. He was a conqueror and Pacifier of the colony " Soudan français " (now the Republic of Mali ) is known.

Life

Louis Archinard came from a Protestant family from Le Havre, where his father was head of the Protestant schools of the city. He entered the École polytechnique a ( X Promotion 1868), from which he was transferred on 10 May 1870 as Sous- lieutenant to the " Régiment d' artillery de marine".

After an insert in Cochinchina 1876-1878 he was appointed polytechnique to study inspector at the École and added at the request of Gustave Borgnis - Desbordes in the French Sudan in 1880. In several campaigns, he managed to successfully continue the colonization of this part of Africa. He conquered Ségou in 1890 and in 1893, Djenné.

After his return to France he was promoted in April 1896 Général de brigade, to Général de division and treated as commander of the " 32e division d' infantry " to Perpignan.

In 1911 he was appointed to the Supreme Military Council ( Conseil supérieur de la guerre ) and received in July 1914, the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor awarded. 1917 was involved in the establishment of the Polish Army in France. In 1919 he was awarded the Médaille militaire.

Général Archinard spent his life in Villiers -le- Bel.

The President of the Republic Paul Doumer, attended a book fair in Paris, when he was the assassination of the Russian emigre Pavel Gorgulow victim. After he was hit by several revolver bullets, he was taken to the Hôpital Beaujon, Clichy, where he died on the night of May 7, 1932. When the 82 -year-old Général Archinard heard of this he collapsed and died a day later shaken.
