Louis de Bernières

Louis de Bernières ( born December 8, 1954 in London ) is a British writer.

Life

Louis de Bernières grew up the son of a British officer in the Middle East. After school, he enrolled in the Military Academy Sandhurst, the British military but left school soon afterwards. In the following years, de Bernières held on in Latin America before he returned to London and took up the study of philosophy. Until 1994 he was able to record his first success with the novel Captain Corelli 's Mandolin, he worked as a landscaper and car mechanic. His novel Birds Without Wings ( German title dream in stone and springs) presents a gambling in an Anatolian village love story on the film of the declining Ottoman Empire. De Bernières illuminated in his more than ten years to the resulting novel once in the coexistence of Jews, Christians and Muslims themselves in village life visible cultural diversity, tells of the rise of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and provides the readers with the rising Turkey as a pawn occidental major powers in mind.

Over the years, de Bernières received (in different categories) the Commonwealth Writers Prize; 1991 The War of Don Emmanuel 's Nether Parts, Señor Vivo 1992 and the Coca Lord, 1995 for Captain Corelli's Mandolin and Birds Without Wings 2005. He also became one of the British Book Awards in 2004 and won the 1997 Whitbread Novel Award the.
