Louis de La Vallée-Poussin

Louis Étienne Joseph Marie de La Vallée Poussin ( born January 1, 1869 in Liege, † February 18, 1938 Brussels) was a Belgian orientalist, specializing in Sanskrit and Buddhism.

Biography

Vallée Poussin graduated with only 19 years in 1888 in his hometown of Liege and a second time after the study of Sanskrit, Pali and the language of the Avesta under Charles de Harlez ( 1832-1899 ) and Philippe Colinet 1891 in lion. After continuing his studies at the Sorbonne in Victor Henri and Sylvain Lévi he received in 1891 in Leuven Professor of Sanskrit.

At the same time he continued his study of the Avesta and the zorastrischen writings in Leiden with Hendrik core, where he also studied Chinese and Tibetan language. In 1893 he was appointed professor of comparative grammar of Greek and Latin at the University of Ghent, which he held until his retirement in 1929.
