Louis-Ernest Barrias

Louis -Ernest Barrias ( born April 13, 1841 in Paris, † February 4, 1905 ) was a French sculptor.

Barrias came from a family of artists; his father was a porcelain painter and older brother of the landscape painter Félix Joseph Barrias. Also Barrias only wanted to be a painter, and was after first art lessons from his father student of Léon Cogniet.

Later Barrias gave up painting in favor of sculpture and became a student in the workshop of the sculptor Pierre Jules Cavelier. Through its recommendation Barrias was adopted at age 17 in 1858 at the École nationale supérieure des beaux -arts in his hometown. One of his most important teacher was there, the sculptor François Jouffroy.

Soon Barrias could participate in the annual exhibition of the Paris Salon and was awarded 1865 on such the Prix de Rome. Five years later, his " Lovely spinner of Megara " on the occasion of a similar exhibition was awarded a prize. His artistic breakthrough was achieved Barrias but only in 1871 with his sculpture "Spartacus swears to avenge his dying father as a young man ."

1878 Barrias received the accolade of the Legion of Honour, in 1881 he was promoted to officer and in 1900 he was appointed commander.

1878 with a renewed participation in the Paris Salon, his sculpture "The first funeral " was awarded (Adam and Eve with the corpse of Abel ) with a Medal of Honor. This was followed in 1881 and 1882 Palissy statue of the little Mozart with the violin, a work full of grace and its characteristics. Barrias also created some magnificent tombs in the cemetery Père Lachaise, including Thomas Couture ( 1879) and Anatole de la Forge (1893 ).

1884 appointed one Barrias as a lecturer at the Ecole de Beaux -Arts; as his main disciples are Josep Clarà, Charles Despineau and Victor Ségoffin mentioned.

At the age of nearly 64 years, the sculptor Louis -Ernest Barrias died on February 4, 1905 in Paris.
