Louis-Léopold Boilly

Louis -Léopold Boilly ( born July 5, 1761 La Bassée in Lille, Nord, † January 5, 1845 in Paris) was a French painter and lithographer.

Life

Boilly was the son of a wood sculptor. He was self-taught as a painter and initially painted portraits and genre paintings in Douai and Arras.

His sons Julien (1796-1874) and Alphonse (1801-1867) were also famous painters. His other son Edouard Boilly (1799-1854) was a composer and his nephew Eugène also a painter.

At 25, he went to Paris, where he was successful fast. He is the creator of 5,000 portraits. His genre paintings are considered to be particularly vivid and true to nature. They also immoral historical and historical value.

Honors

Boilly was nominated for his contributions to the Knight of the Legion of Honour.
