Louis Marie Aubert Du Petit-Thouars

Louis Marie Aubert Du Petit Thouars ( born November 5, 1758 Château de Boumois, Anjou, † May 11, 1831 in Paris) was a French traveler and botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Thouars ".

Biography

After two years of imprisonment during the French Revolution Thouars in 1792 traveled to Mauritius, where he made a map of the island. Then he moved to Madagascar and collected on expeditions in orchids. In the following years, he traveled to Reunion Island, French Polynesia, Tristan da Cunha and in the Cape Colony. 1802 Thouars returned to Paris and published a series of studies on African orchids. In 1820 he was admitted to the Académie des sciences.

Thouars described more than 140 plant taxa and genera, including Hydrostachys and Bulbophyllum.

After Thouars is the plant genus Thuarea pers. named from the family of grasses ( Poaceae ), and also the specific epithets of several taxa as Voacanga thouarsii and Cycas thouarsii.
