Louis Mermaz

Louis Mermaz ( born August 20, 1931 in Paris ) is a French politician of the Parti Socialiste (PS ), former Minister and President of the National Assembly. He was also from 1971 to 2001 mayor of the French city of Vienne.

Life

After schooling Mermaz studied history and began his political career in 1967 when it was first elected to the National Assembly and there after several elections, most recently from 1997 to 2001, the Isere department represented. At the same time he was also mayor of Vienne in 1971, the second largest city in the department of Isère, and has also held this position until 2001. In addition, he was 1976-1985 also president of the General Council of the department of Isère.

On May 22, 1981, he was appointed by Prime Minister Pierre Mauroy as Minister of Equipment and Transport ( Ministre de l' équipement et des transports ) in his cabinet, but this was only one month until 22 June 1981.

Subsequently, he was on July 2, 1981 President of the newly elected National Assembly and previously held this position until April 1, 1986.

On May 12, 1988, he was again Minister of Transport and as such was almost six weeks member of the government of Prime Minister Michel Rocard. Then he was on June 23, 1988 Chairman of the Group of the Parti Socialiste in the National Assembly. Prime Minister Rocard called him on 3 October 1990, in turn, into his cabinet, where he was Minister of Agriculture and Forestry was this time. As such, he also belonged to the successive governments of Édith Cresson and Pierre Bérégovoy. This appointed him as part of a government reshuffle on 2 October 1992 as Minister for Relations with Parliament and government spokesman. In these functions Mermaz remained until the end of Bérégovoys tenure on March 29, 1993.

After its last re-election in 1997, he retired in 2001 from the National Assembly and was instead elected on 23 September 2001 as a member of the Senate. He also represents since the Isere department.
