Louis Thomas Villaret de Joyeuse

Louis Thomas Villaret de Joyeuse (* May 29, 1747 in Auch, † July 24, 1812 in Venice) was a French admiral and politician.

Life

Villaret was born into a family of artisans and officials: his grandfather was Ebenist, his grandfather easier official of the financial management. Since the family could not afford the costly training of a military academy, located Villaret reported at age 21 in 1768 volunteered for the Navy.

He made very quickly and after a few career promotions handed to him in 1781 in command of the ship " Pulvérisateur " and introduced him Admiral Pierre André de Suffren. The following year he was appointed as his aide- de-camp. Under Suffren fought Villaret et al at Cuddalore (20 June 1783).

In the same year Villaret was involved on the way to Madras by the British in a naval battle, which ended with his captivity. After the Peace of Paris (3 September 1783) he again released and was able to sail back to France.

By Suffrens mediation Villaret was summoned to the port commander of Lorient. Later he took part in the naval battle at the Glorious First 13 (1 June 1794) and fought bravely at Gloix (23 June 1795). Under command of Admiral Justin Morard de Galles he took in 1796 on the Irish expedition ( December 1796 ) in part to support the Society of United Irishmen in their struggle for independence. Back in France he founded - together with Jeanbon St. André - the establishment of an Artillery School for the Navy.

1796 Villaret called you as a representative of Morbihan in the Council of Five Hundred. As a committed royalist Villaret was also a member of the Club de Vichy and have survived some speeches in which he spoke out against abolitionism and the colonial policy.

After the coup (4 September 1797), the Board ordered, inter alia, the arrest Villarets and whose deportation to Cayenne (French Guiana ). Villaret was able to hide as long as until the penalty had been converted into an exile on the Ile d' Oléron.

After the Peace Treaty of Amiens ( 25./27. March 1802 ) pardoned Napoleon Villaret and also confirmed its military rank. As in the same year, General Charles Leclerc d' Ostin an invading army put together to tackle in Saint- Domingue ( Hispaniola ) against the insurgents under Toussaint Louverture. Villaret volunteered.

1811, Napoleon convened Villaret military governor of Venice. On July 24, 1812 Villaret died at the age of 65 years in Venice and found his final resting place.
