Louis Waldman

Louis Waldman (* January 5, 1892, † 1982) was a leader of the Socialist Party of America and prominent labor law attorney.

Biography

Waldman was born in Ukraine. As a teenager, he moved to New York City. When he first attended an engineering school, he later switched to studying law. In 1917 he was elected as a Socialist in the New York State Assembly in 1919 and confirmed in this function. 1919 all five Socialist members were then excluded.

Waldman was the leader of a force as an anti-Communist wing of the Socialist Party of America. He was also a big opponent of Leon Trotsky when he lived in Manhattan, where he was active in the party.

It was 1928 Chairman of the Socialist Party in the U.S. state of New York and was this year and 1932 candidate for the office of governor. During this time, he quickly became a leader in the "Old Guard" of the party that was against the positions of the mostly occupied by young militant wing. This wing was a reunion with the Communist Party of the United States. The "Old Guard" left the party after the militant wing had won in 1934 the control of the party. After emerging, they founded the Social Democratic Federation (SDF ).

Many members of the SDF joined the American Labor Party (ALP ) in the case when it was founded in 1936 and supported the US-led David Dubinsky wing of the party. Waldman, however, came in 1940 from out of the ALP, because he had the feeling that advised the party under the control of pro-communist wing, which was led by Sidney Hillman. Not even four years later Dubinsky and his followers came to the same conclusion and resigned from the party to found out about the Liberal Party of New York.

After his resignation from the ALP Waldman had virtually no connections to politics, which is why he completely devoted himself to the legal profession. In his work, he sat on the improvement of workers' rights and served in numerous committees of the State of New York. The legal profession he held until his death in 1982.
