Lucas Faydherbe

Lucas Faydherbe ( born January 19, 1617 in Mechelen, † December 31, 1697 ) was an Brabant sculptor and architect of the Dutch Renaissance.

Life

Lucas Faydherbe was a son of Malines alabaster carver Faydherbe Hendrik ( 1577-1640 ). In 1636 he went to Antwerp to study with Peter Paul Rubens. In 1640 he had to return to his native town to marry his pregnant fiancee Maria Sneyers. In the same year he opened his own workshop there as master. His work included not only projects of construction especially high altars and tombs for churches. In 1658 he was considering a move to Brussels, probably because he hoped there more orders; his application for the Brussels civil rights, however, was unsuccessful, and he remained in Mechelen. He died eighty years old, four years after his wife, and was buried in the Cathedral of Mechelen.
