Lucas van Valckenborch

Lucas van Valckenborch (* 1535 or shortly thereafter in Leuven; † buried on February 2, 1597 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a Flemish painter.

Life

Lucas van Valckenborch was probably formed in Mechelen, at least he is listed in the local registers of the Guild of St. Luke. Who were his teachers, but is unknown. 1564 was Jaspar van der Linden his student. 1566 left the Protestant Valkenborch together with his brother Marten, Hans de Vries Vredeman and Hendrik Steenwijk the Elder reasons of faith, the hometown and first went to Aachen, then to Liege. In Antwerp he came into contact with Archduke Matthias, the governor of the Spanish Netherlands, and entered his service in 1579. When Matthias 1581 resigned as governor, Valkenborch succeeded him as court painter to Linz. 1592/93 he moved to Frankfurt, where his brother lived since 1586. Van Valckenborch got there in 1594, the Civil Rights and died in 1597.

Some relatives were also painters: In addition to the brother Marten van Valckenborch these were also his sons, Gillis van Valckenborch and Frederik van Valckenborch.

Performance

Lucas van Valckenborch was a landscape painter in the wake of Pieter Brueghel the Elder. It preferably painted pictures of the seasons with the representation of rural labor and civic pleasure. In addition, market pictures in the various seasons originated. The landscapes are sometimes topographically accurate, even though they were doing the old concept of " world landscape " follow, so are inventions.
