Lucha Reyes (Peruvian singer)

Lucila J. Sars Ines Reyes ( born July 19, 1936 in Lima, † October 31, 1973 ibid ) was one of the most famous Peruvian singers of her time, one of the most famous Afro- Peruvian personalities, and a symbol of Peruvian nationalism both in Peru itself and in the Peruvian emigration.

Life history

Lucha Reyes was born in a poor family in the Peruvian capital Lima as one of sixteen siblings. When she was six months old, her father died Tobias Sars Ines. Lucha Reyes was temporarily raised by relatives of their parents. To survive, she sold as a child, newspapers and lottery tickets. At times, she lived in a Catholic church because the house in which she lived was burned down.

As a child, Reyes sang often at family gatherings. At one of these parties met Pitito Perez, who was a famous singer in Peru. Perez liked her voice and invited them together to form a duo called " Lucha y Juan ".

The duo gave Reyes the opportunity to appear in national radio broadcasts. The first radio show in which they occurred, was called " El Sentir de los Barrios ", in German as: " How do people feel in the barrios ." She sang the famous song " Abandonada " (Exit) by Sixto Carrera, a song with a text, which presumably also their own experiences on the streets of Lima reflects.

Lucha Reyes lived a life similar to that in its most tragic songs. She married briefly a police officer and refused her lifetime to reveal the reason for the short duration of their marriage. Later diagnosed with tuberculosis and diabetes.

Her art

Reyes joined from time to time in plays in the Lima region, and eventually played in the film " Una Carta al Cielo " ( A letter to the sky ) by Salvador Oda, who is about a boy whose dead mother speaks to him. Reyes gave this dead mother her voice.

This performance convinced Reyes that they had a future in acting. She subsequently went on in various plays. Their Afro- Peruvian and Creole music was encouraged by the then nationalist military government.

In 1970, Reyes took their biggest hit " Regresa " ( Come back ), which became a hit internationally. After this success, she took on their first LP, and began their only international tour.
