Lucy Madox Brown

Lucy Madox Brown ( born July 19, 1843 in Paris, † April 12, 1894 in Sanremo ) was a British painter and writer.

Life

Lucy Madox Brown was the only daughter of Ford Madox Brown and Elizabeth Bromley ( 1818-46 ). She was born July 19, 1843 in Paris. 1844, might the parents settled in England in 1846 and her mother died.

Between 1855-57 she lived with the Rossetti and was taught by Maria Francesca and mother Frances Rossetti.

From 1868 she received from her father, drawing lessons and assisted him in his studio. She painted mostly watercolors. Already in the following year she exhibited at the Royal Academy. A 1870 issued at the Dudley Gallery Watercolor, ' Apres le Bal, ' a lot of attention. This was followed by ' Romeo and Juliet in the Vault ' (1871 ); 'The Fair Geraldine ' (1872 ) also watercolors and ' Ferdinand and Miranda playing chess ' (1872 ) and ' Margaret Roper receiving the Head of her Father' (1873 ). " Romeo and Juliet " from the year 1871 ( Wightwick Manor, Wolverhampton) is generally regarded as her masterpiece. As models for Romeo and Juliet Lucy served their half-siblings Cathy and Oliver.

After their marriage on 31 March 1874, William Michael Rossetti, she gave up painting.

They had five children who received all the last name Madox:

  • September 1875 Olivia Frances Madox, married in 1897 Antonio Agresti
  • February 1877 Gabriel Arthur Madox, was an electrical engineer with a private company, in 1901 married Dora Slater Lewis, son of Geoffrey William Madox
  • November 1879 Helen Mary Madox, painted miniatures, married in 1903 Gastone Angeli
  • April 1881 Mary Elizabeth Madox, among other things, studied biology, and Michael Ford Madox † 1883 ( Gemini )

1890, published in the ' Eminent Women Series' ( Significant women) her book Life of Mrs. Shelley.

When she fell ill with tuberculosis, it should bring a stay in Italy relief. But her lungs failed and she died at the Hotel Victoria, San Remo, on 12 April 1894. She was buried in the cemetery of La Foce in San Remo.
