Ludbreg

Ludbreg (German Lubring ) is a city and an administrative community in the northwest of Croatia in Central Croatia. It is located half way between the towns of Varaždin and Koprivnica on the left bank of the Bednja in Podravina ( Drau ). According to the 2011 census, the town has 8,478 inhabitants.

Administratively, the city is part of the Ludbreg Varaždin County ( kroat. Varaždinska županija ).

Ludbreg has been known for centuries as a place of pilgrimage and is visited every year by thousands of pilgrims. The town was first mentioned in 1320 as Castrum Ludbreg. The name probably comes from a crusader named Lobring, who founded the settlement. In the renovated castle of the noble family Batthyány ( kroat. Bacan ) is housed a recognized restoration workshop. Ludbreg is also a wine region (especially for Riesling and graševina ).
