Lüder Deecke

Lueder Deecke ( born June 22, 1938 in Lohe- Rickelshof, Schleswig -Holstein ) is a German neurologist, neuroscientist and emeritus professor. In particular, his discovery of the readiness potential, together with Hans Helmut Kornhuber had enormous significance for neuroscience.

Life and work

After passing the Abitur in 1958 at the Humanistic Gymnasium Ernestinum Celle he began studying physics at the University of Hamburg, but was called up for military service in 1959, which he finished in 1960 as a lieutenant. From 1960 to 1965 he studied with a scholarship from the Study Foundation of the German people, medicine in Freiburg im Breisgau, Hamburg and Vienna. In 1966 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the readiness potential, which he had discovered with his doctor father, Hans Helmut Kornhuber. From 1966 to 1968 he worked at the University Hospital Freiburg with Prof. Richard Young and from 1968 to 1970 at the University Hospital Ulm Prof. Kornhuber. After a period of study as a Research Fellow 1970-71 at the University of Toronto, he habilitated in 1974 professor of neurology and neurophysiology. In 1982 he was a visiting professor at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, the 2003 honorary doctorate conferred on him. In 1985 he was appointed Professor of Clinical Neurology at the Medical University of Vienna and the management of neurological University Hospital of Vienna. In October 2006, Deecke became Professor Emeritus.

Deecke 1987 was President of the Austrian National Multiple Sclerosis Society. In 2000 he received the Hans Berger Award of the German Society for Clinical Neurophysiology. In December 2009 he was awarded the Prix Theophil Gluge the Royal Belgian Academy of Sciences for his scientific achievements in neurology and the neurosciences.
