Ludwig Averkamp

Ludwig Averkamp ( born February 16, 1927 in Velen, Münster, Germany, † July 29, 2013 in Hamburg) was until 2002 the first ( modern ) Archbishop of Hamburg. Previously, he had led the Diocese of Osnabrück.

Life

Ludwig Averkamp, son of a farmer family came in 1947 in the Münster seminary and studied from 1947 to 1957 theology and philosophy at the universities of Münster and in Rome with subsequent doctorate in theology. His doctoral thesis was the Christian joy in Paul's letters. In 1954 he received the priesthood in Rome. From 1957 he was a chaplain in dates - Ahsen and Rheine and then to 1965 Church President of the Episcopal High School and Studienkonvikts Collegium Johanneum in Greven near Münster. From 1964 to 1971 Bishop Joseph Hoffner took him as a director at the Episcopal Theologenkonvikt Collegium Borromaeum in Münster. In 1971 he became rector of the Episcopal Seminary in Münster.

In 1973, Ludwig was Averkamp by Pope Paul VI. appointed Titular Bishop of Thapsus and auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Münster. He received his episcopal consecration on 24 February 1973, the Bishop of Münster, Heinrich Tenhumberg. Co-consecrators were the Auxiliary Bishops and Laurenz Heinrich Baaken Böggering.

Averkamp was until 1983 Regional Bishop of the Lower Rhine region, based in Xanten. From 1986 to 1987 he was Coadjutor Bishop of Osnabrück, Helmut Hermann Wittler, as his successor, he was appointed by Pope John Paul II in 1987. In this office he remained until he was appointed on 24 October 1994 as archbishop of the Archdiocese of Hamburg rebuilt and inaugurated on 7 January of the following year.
