Ludwig Helmbold

Ludwig Helmbold (* January 21, 1532 in Mühlhausen, † April 8, 1598 ) was a Lutheran hymn writer.

Life and work

Ludwig Helmbold was from 1554 Vice-Principal and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Erfurt. 1570, in the conflicts of the Counter-Reformation, he was forced to abdicate. From 1571 he served as pastor of St. Mary's Church and later as superintendent in Mühlhausen. He died in performance of his duties as the result of jaundice disease.

Helmbold was crowned in 1566 at the Diet of Augsburg of the German emperor Maximilian II as poet laureate. The Muehlhaeuser cantors Joachim a Burck and John Eccard set to music many of his more than 100 songs seals.

In the current Evangelical Hymns ( EC), the lyrics are to the songs EC 320 ( Well let God, the Lord ), EC 365 (By God, I do not want to leave ) and EC regional section Nordelbien 558 ( Amen, God the Father and the Son ) of it.
