Ludwig Lange (architect)

Ludwig Lange ( born March 22, 1808 in Darmstadt, † March 31, 1868 in Munich) was a German architect, architectural and landscape artist.

Life

Ludwig Lange was born in 1808 in Darmstadt, the son of a court official. In 1823 he began his training as an architect at Georg August Lerch, which he continued in 1826 at the University of Giessen. From 1826 to 1830 he also worked with Georg Moller. From 1830 to 1834 he was a pupil of the landscape painter Carl Rottmann in Munich, which he first undertook in 1834 a study trip to Greece. On another trip, he met Ludwig Steub know and followed him on his sailing trip to Hydra and the Cyclades.

In 1835 he was appointed drawing teacher at the new Royal High School in Athens, Greece, also appointed by the Greek King Otto I to the inspector on May 15. In 1838 he returned to Munich and began traveling extensively through Germany. In 1847 he was then appointed as successor by August von Voit professor for architecture of the school of architecture at the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich.

Ludwig is best known for his lithographed Picturesque views of the strangest and most beautiful cathedrals, churches and monuments of Gothic architecture on the Rhine, Main and Lahn (Frankfurt 1833-1834 ). In 1832 he was, together with the engraver E. smoke out the original views of Germany, which contains original drawings for his views of the most eminent cities in Germany, its most important cathedrals, churches and other monuments in the steel engraving. Parts of his numerous designs he published works in the higher architecture ( Darmstadt from 1846 to 1855, 3 volumes).

The royal villa at Berchtesgaden and the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig (1856-1857) are built according to his plans. In his buildings, he joined to the classic pattern of the Italian Renaissance. His students include his son, the former director of the Royal School of Applied Arts in Munich, Emil Lange, the Swiss Joseph Bühlmann and the Meininger Albert Schmidt.

His grave is in the Old South Cemetery.
