Ludwig Wittmack

Ludwig Witt Mack, whose full name Max Carl Ludwig Witt Mack ( born September 26, 1839 in Hamburg, † February 2nd, 1929 in Berlin) was a German botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Wittm. ".

Life and work

Witt Mack studied botany at the University of Jena ( 1864) and at the University of Berlin ( 1865). Ensete 1867 with the dissertation Musa. A contribution to the knowledge of the bananas from the University of Göttingen Dr. phil. doctorate. In the same year (1867 ) he was curator at the Agricultural Museum in Berlin; he managed the Agricultural Museum, including plant breeding. In 1874 he completed his habilitation at the University of Berlin. From 1880 to 1913 he was professor of botany at the Agricultural College in Berlin, from 1880 to 1920 professor of botany at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Berlin. From 1875 to 1905 he was Director of the Experimental Station of the Association of German Müller. From 1883 to 1924 Witt Mack was a member of the Department of seeds breeding at the German Agricultural Society. From 1889 to 1891, and again from 1910 to 1913 he was director of the Agricultural Institute. He held various honorary positions.

Witt Mack wrote many writings botanical, but also agricultural content. For the work of Flora brasiliensis of the German botanist Karl Friedrich Philipp von Martius he steered " Marcgraviaceae, Rihizoboleae " ( for Volume 12 Number 1, 1858/1889 ) with, for the work The natural plant families of Adolf Engler and Carl Prantl he wrote " Bromeliaceae " ( Volume 2 number 4, 1887-1888 ). Witt Mack from 1887 was for many years editor of the journal garden flora.

A plant genus Wittmackia Mez from the family Bromeliaceae ( Bromeliaceae ) has been named in his honor, but this has long been only a synonym of Aechmea. Some plant species are named after him, such as Guzmania wittmackii.
