Luer taper

Luer -Lock is a standardized connection system for hose systems in the medical field. It finds use in, among other things needles, syringes, catheters, three-way valves and infusion tubing.

The seal is achieved here by a conical design of the connecting pieces, the so-called Luer cone. The inner cone of a connection page is also referred to as female, the outer cone of the other side as a male.

When the male cone is extended to lock the connection by a union nut with thread, referred to the system as a Luer lock. The connection can thus be protected against accidental release, it opens and closes with a half twist.

The simpler version without screw thread is designated plug with Luer Lock or Slip.

The Luer system ensures compatibility between different manufacturers and is internationally standardized by the standard ISO 594 Part 1 ISO 594-1:1986 describes " General requirements " for " Conical fittings with a 6 % - ( Luer) taper for syringes, needles and other medical equipment; he is European harmonized in the EN 20594-1:1993 and as such in the German translation as DIN EN 20594-1:1996 " Conical fittings with a 6 % ( Luer) taper for syringes, needles and certain other medical equipment " appeared, which the older standard DIN 13090-1:1986 replaced. Part 2 ISO 594-2:1998 describes " Lock fittings ". Here in Europe is still the harmonized European standard EN 1707-1996 and the German translation of DIN EN 1707-1997.

The term Luer goes to the German, but acting in Paris instrument maker Hermann Wülfing Luer († 1883 in Paris? ) Back. The luer connector combined with a rotation device was first described in 1952. The spellings Luer -Lok for connection with safety and luer slip for those without are protected as registered trademarks of Becton Dickinson.
