Luigi Tripepi

Luigi Cardinal Tripepi ( born June 21, 1836 in Cardeto, † December 29, 1906 in Rome ) was a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Luigi Tripepi was born in 1836 as son of Count Don Antonino Tripepi and Donna Margherita Manuardi in Cardeto. He studied in the episcopal seminary, later in Rome. In 1864 he was ordained priest. In 1865 he was a member of the Society of Jesus for a short time. In 1868 he was appointed chaplain to the Lateran Basilica. In 1878 he became the canon of the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Damaso, from 1879 at the Lateran Basilica, 1885 St. Peter's Basilica. As early as 1883 he was prelate of the Apostolic Signatura, 1884 Secretary of the Historical Commission and from 1892 prefect of the archives of the Holy See. In 1894 he was called by Pope Leo XIII. appointed secretary of the Holy Congregation of Rites, 1896 appointed ex officio proceedings of the Vatican Secretariat of State.

Pope Leo XIII. created him in the consistory of 15 April 1901, Cardinal and appointed him cardinal deacon of Santa Maria in Domnica. Cardinal Tripepi took part in the conclave that on August 4, 1903 Pius X chose. From 1903 until his death he was ( pro-) Prefect of the Sacred Congregation of Rites.

He died at the age of 70 years on 29 December 1906 in Rome.

Work

It was one of the greatest apologists of the Catholic Church in the 19th century and wrote over two hundred works (also in Latin and Greek ) on various topics: history, philosophy, exegesis, dogmatic and moral theology.
