Luis Ãngel Firpo
Luis Ángel Firpo ( born October 11, 1894 in Junín, Argentina; † August 7, 1960 ) was an Argentine heavyweight boxer who is known for his world title fight against Jack Dempsey today.
Career
Firpo was 1.89M tall and weighed 100 kg, which was quite large for those times and made him an above-average puncher. He defeated first only windfalls and lost a couple of times until it in 1923 in the United States ex- challenger Bill Brennan and former world champion Jess Willard ausknockte. Since he was very charismatic and could sell well, Dempsey's promoter was happy to leave to challenge him as " Pampas Bull" the world champion. But the battle was not quite as easy as I thought as the Champ Firpo in the first round out of the ring, suggested journalists in the audience helped him contrary to the rules to return to the ring and Dempsey won in the next round by KO. This very compact course of combat generally suggested to the imagination and George Bellows painted a famous picture of the ring battle. That Firpo but was more hype job as a real serious fighter, showed in his fight against the colored Harry Wills against whom he somehow came across the rounds, but was completely chance. Since Firpo was extremely intelligent and enterprising, he kept his money together and sat down as a rich man in his home to rest.
