Luis Cubilla (1966 )

Luis Alberto Cubilla Almeida ( born March 28, 1940 in Paysandú, † March 3, 2013 in Asunción, Paraguay ) was a Uruguayan football player and coach. With the national team of his native country, he participated in the World Cup finals in 1962, 1970 and 1974. He was the brother of Pedro Rodrigo Cubillas Cubillas and grandfather.

Career as a player

Association

In youth played el Negro Cubilla, who acted as a striker at the club Colón de Paysandu. In 1957, he debuted at the montevideanischen Club Peñarol. With the Aurinegros he won four national championships (1958, 1959, 1960 and 1961), twice the Copa Libertadores (1960 and 1961) and the Intercontinental Cup ( 1961). Then moved Cubilla 1962 after Spain for FC Barcelona for which he also played the following year and where his time playing together stars like the two ex- Hungary Sándor Kocsis and Zoltán Czibor who for some time from Hungary Come László Kubala and the young Luis Suárez under coach Helenio Herrera. In his time with the Argentines, he reached with his teammates again in 1966 the three final matches in the Copa Libertadores, where Cubilla participated respectively over the full distance. With the Bolsos he was again four times Uruguayan champion in a row (1969, 1970, 1971, 1972). His active career ended Cubilla 1976 at the age of 36 years.

National

Between 1959 and 1974 the brother Pedro Cubillas graduated ( World Cup participants from 1962 ) 38 games for Uruguay. He scored 11 goals.

In 1962 he completed his first World Cup in Chile. However, Celeste separated already from in the first round after about World Cup newcomer Colombia was a victory only in the 2-1 and the other games against Yugoslavia were lost with 1:3 and 1:2 against the Soviet Union. Cubilla scored a single victory in the 75th minute of the match against Colombia 2-1 after previously were Zuluaga of Colombia and Sasia successfully for Uruguay.

To his second World Cup appearance came Cubilla until 1970 in Mexico. In the preliminary round, Uruguay started with a 2-0 victory against Israel, which the pre-decisive for reaching the quarter-finals 0-0 followed against the eventual runners-up Italy. In the decisive group game then handed a 0-1 defeat to Sweden to progress. After the USSR had been defeated 1-0 after extra time in the quarterfinals, the Celeste met in the semifinals to eventual champions Brazil. Although Cubilla scored the opening goal to make it 1-0 after 19 minutes, but the Brazilians used the game more and eventually won 3-1. In the 3rd place match Uruguay defeated then Germany 0:1.

1974 in Germany played Cubilla his third and final World Cup, in Uruguay, however, remained meaningless and the tournament by just one point in a 1-1 win against Bulgaria and two defeats ( 0-2 against the eventual runners-up the Netherlands and 0-3 against Sweden) as table of preliminary round group left.

Career as a coach

After his playing career Cubilla also worked as a trainer. He was particularly evident as a supervisor of the team of the Paraguayan club Club Olimpia successful, he started after a 1977 charge of trainer time at Danubio. With Olimpia that it conducted a total of six exposures in the course of his coaching career, he won the regional championship in 1978, 1979 and 1980. 1979 he led the club to win the title in the Copa Libertadores, the Copa Interamericana and after victories against Malmö FF the World Cup. With Peñarol in 1980 he won the Uruguayan championship, with Atlético Nacional 1983, the Colombian championship. In 1990, he coached Olimpia again and again he managed an international double when he again Copa Libertadores Recopa Sudamericana and won with the club Olimpia. Cubilla held the office of the Uruguayan national team in the years 1991 to 1993. As such, he debuted on June 12, 1991 with a 0-1 defeat against Peru. His 27th and final international game in charge took place on 15 August 1993. Opponents in this 1-1 draw was the Brazilian selection.

Other engagements are at the club Nacional, Argentina's River Plate, the CA Newell 's Old Boys, the Racing Club Avellaneda, Centauro from Colombia, Talleres de Córdoba, Comunicaciones (Guatemala), Libertad (Paraguay ), Tacuary (Paraguay ) or the Barcelona SC Guayaquil out. Most recently, he was the coach of the Peruvian clubs Colegio Nacional Iquitos. On 3 March 2013, died of stomach cancer in a private hospital in Asunción, capital of Paraguay. His remains are to be transferred to Montevideo, where Cubilla will find its final resting place.
