Luis de Velasco, marqués de Salinas

Luis de Velasco y Castilla, marqués de Salinas, differentiating it from his father, also named additional: joven el hijo, son named (* 1539 in Carrión de los Condes, Spain, † 1617 in Seville ) was a Spanish conquistador who as Viceroy of New Spain and Peru officiated.

Velasco was born in Spain, the son of the conquistador, later to become the same name, Luis de Velasco. 1590 he was appointed Viceroy of New Spain. He reached peace with the Indians; in his tenure, the creation of settlements in Jalisco, Guanajuato, Zacatecas and San Luis Potosí.

As viceroy of Peru (from 1599), he also had to continue the war with the rebellious Mapuche. In 1607 he was re-appointed viceroy to Mexico; in his second term falls the expedition of Sebastián Vizcaíno, which led to Japan.

After his return to Europe, he received a seat on the Council of the Indies to the Spanish crown.
