Luís de Velasco

Don Luis de Velasco, Marqués de Salinas ( * 1511 in Carrión de los Condes, † July 31, 1564 in Mexico City) was second viceroy of New Spain.

Life

Velasco came of an old Castilian noble family and held several administrative offices, before he came to Mexico in 1550 to replace Antonio de Mendoza as viceroy. Velasco reiterated the laws of 1542, which should limit the exploitation of the locals, and liberated thousands of Indians. 1553 Velasco opened the Real y Pontificia Universidad de México, and in 1559 he sent a successful expedition to conquer Florida from. During his reign, the Spanish settlers penetrated further into the north, and the rich silver mines of Zacatecas were exploited. Shortly before his death was preparing Velasco before the Legazpiexpedition to the Philippines.

His son of the same name, Luis de Velasco ( "el joven " ), Marqués de Salinas ( 1539-1616 ), was twice viceroy of New Spain and one of Peru.
