Lumbricals of the foot

The Musculi lumbricales pedis (Latin for " worm-like muscles of the foot " ) are four delicate skeletal muscles on the plantar side of the metatarsal bones. They derive from the tendons of the flexor digitorum longus ( in animals of the flexor digitorum profundus ). They run on the inside of the second to fifth toes and put - together with the corresponding tendons of the flexor digitorum longus spin-offs - at the Fußrückenseite of the first phalanx and the extensor caps the toe bones to.

Through their flexion of the metatarsophalangeal joints and stretching of the toe joints (especially proximal ), the muscles play a role in fine motor control of the toes.
