Lusikisiki

Province

Lusikisiki is a place in South Africa's Eastern Cape Province. It is located in the municipality in the district Ngquza Hill OR Tambo. Here live according to the census of 2011, around 4,028 people.

Geography

The town is located 45 kilometers north of Port St Johns in the historical region East Pondoland. The region is hilly.

History

Lusikisiki arose from a 1894 set up military base. Since 1932 there is an administration. The name is onomatopoeic and refers to the sound of reed in the wind.

Lusikisiki was the capital of Pondoland and one of the seats of the AmaMpondo kingdom. King Faku, founder of the modern AmaMpondo kingdom, was born there. He left in 1830 to set up the first mission station in Pondoland. 6 June 1960 eleven residents were killed in Ngquza Hill massacre by the government authorities. Then Lusikisiki was a center of resistance to apartheid, was there led by the Non European Unity Movement. In 1963 the area in spite of resistance to Transkei, which was incorporated in 1994 after South Africa. In Lusikisiki guerrillas of the Lesotho Liberation Army were trained for terrorist attacks in Lesotho by the U.S. mercenary Robert MacKenzie in the 1980s.

Infrastructure

In the village there are several hospitals and Ngqungqushe Technical College. Outside the town there is a small airport ( ICAO code FALK ). The R61 leads in a north-south direction through the site. With the planned relocation of N2 Lusikisiki to be connected to the national road network.
