Luzula

Field Wood-rush ( Luzula campestris )

The wood rush ( Luzula ), also known as grove rushes or regionally referred to as Marbel, is a genus of flowering plants in the family of Rushes ( Juncaceae ). It includes about 115 species worldwide. These are mostly characterized by a long off-white and soft pubescence of the leaf blades and leaf sheaths mouths.

Distribution and location

Luzulo are common in the temperate and arctic regions of both hemispheres ( cosmopolitan ). The focus of their diversity is in Europe and Asia. In the tropics, their occurrence is restricted to the higher altitudes of the mountains. In contrast to the rushes ( Juncus ) prefer the species of the genus Luzula drier soils and shady locations such as forests and thickets.

Description

Luzulo are perennial herbaceous plants. Most species are of horstförmigem growth. They often form short rhizomes or stolons rare. The leaves are basal. The stem leaves are, when available, often reduced. The leaf arrangement is three lines. The leaf blades are grass -like and flat, rarely rinnig. The leaf sheaths are always closed. The leaf margins and vaginal orifices are ciliated with a few exceptions, long and soft. The vaginal opening is not auriculate.

The inflorescence is a Spirre, a modified form of the panicle. The rand union and lower flowers are stalked longest. The central or upper, however, are swamped. In this way, an almost cup- shaped structure. The flower organs, six bracts ( tepals ), six stamens ( stamens ) and three carpels ( carpels ) are regular and mostly fully formed. The ovaries are always upper constant and end in three relatively long, papillary, often screwed stigma lobes. The fruit capsules are unicompartmental and dreisamig. The base of each seed is hairy. At the top of the seeds of white appendage ( elaiosomes ) are formed in many ways. The Luzulo alongside wind propagation ( Anemochorie ) is the ants spread ( Myrmeochorie ) is predominant. The fat-rich appendage of the seed is the ants as food. The seeds are carried into the Ameisenbauten and so deported to other places.
