Lviv Theatre of Opera and Ballet

The current building is the result of an architectural competition held in 1895, which was won by Polish architect Zygmunt Gorgolewski ( 1845-1903 ), the then director of the technical college in the city.

Gorgolewski proposed to build the theater in the former marshes of the vaulted Poltava River, and this landmark decision rendered an essential design element for today's "Freedom Avenue " ( the now common term " Avenue " for Ukrainian " Prospectus", Проспект Свободи - Brochure Swobody: originally, later named after Archduke Karl Ludwig after VI Lenin, Lemberger main road and walking a mile ). On June 5, 1896, the groundbreaking ceremony took place, the actual construction phase lasted just over three years ( according to an inscription in the foyer 1897-1900 ). The historicist construction was based on the models of the architecture of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, specifically but apparently on that of the Vienna Court Opera.
