Archduke Karl Ludwig of Austria

Archduke Karl Ludwig Joseph Maria of Austria ( born July 30, 1833 in Vienna Schönbrunn, † May 19, 1896 ) was a brother of Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria.

Life

Karl Ludwig was the third son of Archduke Franz Karl. He was a younger brother of Emperor Franz Joseph I. and father of the heir apparent Franz Ferdinand and Archduke Otto Franz Joseph, the father of Emperor Karl I

Karl Ludwig's highest political function was that of a Governor in Tirol. This office he was already after six years on again. He was interested more in art than politics and the military. He was protector of several artists' associations and were like balls and fundraisers.

His mother, Archduchess Sophie Karl Ludwig raised a strict Catholic and also sought his three wives from. He suffered increasingly from religious mania and blessed passers out of the coach out.

After the death of Crown Prince Rudolf in 1889, he was heir to the Austria -Hungarian Empire. Karl Ludwig died of a disease which he had contracted from contaminated water from the Jordan on a trip to Egypt and Palestine. He attended his son Franz Ferdinand, who cured his tuberculosis in Cairo.
