Background

After Mike VanPortfleet called Lycia in 1988 as a solo project to life, occurred in the summer of the same year Will Welch in the project. In November, it was replaced by John Fair. In March 1989, their first release " Wake" appeared in the form of a 6 -track cassette on the label Orphanage Records. The sound is characterized at that time by the dominant rock guitars and rhythm patterns from the drums.

1990 John left fair Lycia, Will Welch returned. The sound of Lycia became increasingly active in a noise -heavy direction. End of the same year, work began on the first album " Byzantine ", which, however, due to technical problems never appeared. Mike VanPortfleet decided to process some fragments of the album for a second run. The end result was published in September 1991 under the title " Ionia " on the label Projekt Records and is characterized by Ambient textures and very extensive and atmospheric sounds.

Meanwhile, production started on the next album " A Day In The Stark Corner " is already in full swing. This was published in August 1992 and follows on seamlessly from its predecessor sounded technically " Ionia " to. Soon after the occupation and the sound changed again. The line up has been extended to David Galas. Under the project name Bleak work began on the album " Vane ", which tends, however, in a much harder direction. In turn, new tracks were compiled for the main project Lycia, fell back for more on acoustic guitars. In the line-up strengthened by the singer Tara VanFlower this material was brought out in 1995 as a double CD under the name " The Burning Circle And Then Dust".

The albums " Cold" (1996) and " Estrella " (1998), each of the albums has its own unique distinctive sound. Under the title " Estraya " appeared the E. P. "The Time Has Come And Gone " with songs that are based on ambient soundscapes and acoustic guitars. With the same sound concept, but under the name of the main project Lycia in 2002 came the album " Tripping Back Into The Broken Days " on the market.

In October 2003, " Lycia " separated them from their label Projekt Records, was released two months later their previous studio album "Empty Space".
