Lyons River

The Lyons River is a river in the west of the Australian state of Western Australia. It is located in the region of Gascoyne.

Geography

The river rises in the western part of Teano Range, then flows first north-west to the village of Gifford, then west to the settlement Mangaroon and finally south to its confluence with the Gascoyne River in the small town of Gascoyne Junction near the southern tip of the Kennedy Range National park.

History

The first European who discovered the river, was in 1858 the researcher Francis Gregory. He named it after the naval hero Admiral Sir Edmund Lyons.

For the Aborigines, the Malgaru, the river is called Mithering.
