M6 (Istanbul Metro)

The line M5 will be a future line of the Istanbul Metro. The line was launched in March 2012 and construction is expected to commence normal operation in May 2015. It will then move to a total length of 20 km 16 stations. According to the M4 M5 in 2015 will be the second metro line on the Asian side of the mega city, but do not intersect with this.

Course

The M5 will run from the existing 2014 S Station Üsküdar on the Asian side of Istanbul, in an easterly direction to Çekmeköy - Sancaktepe. In Üsküdar can then be switched to the features of the Marmaray commuter train system that will pass through it in a tunnel under the Bosphorus on the European side of the city. In Altunizade, passengers will also be able migrated into the likewise connecting Europe with Asia Metrobüs.

Importance

On the Asian side of Istanbul from the Bosphorus from the colonization extends eastward on the one hand and on the other hand along the shoreline southeastward. The southeastern part is connected by the M4 already on the metro network and the lines of the S- Bahn network. To the east, however, still lacking speed rail links, such that the public passenger transport is carried here from city buses that connect the lying inland area with Üsküdar on the coast and make the connection to Metrobüs. Since many citizens live on the Asian side of the city but work on the European side, there is a large commuter flow in east-west direction and back. At present this is still carried by ferries and by the individual or bus via the two Bosphorus bridges. Along the planned route of the M5 some large housing estates have emerged, so that there are several hundred thousand people live. The circulation for those citizens should be improved with the new metro line.

Construction costs

For the construction of the conducted by the United Doğuş Construction Group construction project 564 million euros were estimated to be borne by the public sector.
