Macy's

Macy's, Inc. is the largest department store operator in the U.S. with 798 stores (as of January 2013). The holding company is headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio. Particularly well known is the parent company in New York City, which bills itself as the largest department store in the world. The company is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

History

Macy's was in New York City on the corner of 6th on October 28, 1858 Avenue/14. Street as R. H. Macy & Company was founded. Founders was Rowland Hussey Macy former whalers. As a company logo, he chose a red star, which he wore as a tattoo from his seafaring time. Later moved Macy's in the 18th Street and Broadway, to which was one of the most expensive shopping streets in the 19th century.

As a Macy died in 1877, his original small shop had grown to eleven buildings. After his death, the shop expanded among the brothers Nathan and Isidor Straus on. The brothers managed under the Macy porcelain and glassware department. After moving to the main house can be found on Herald Square since 1902. Isidor Straus and his wife died in 1912 in the sinking of the Titanic.

To 1920/1930 began Macy's to open stores in other cities. Regardless of the company Federated Department Stores ( Federated short or FDS ) was 1929 in Columbus, Ohio, founded as a holding company of the entities Abraham & Straus, F & R Lazarus & Company and William Filene's Sons. 1930 was added in Bloomingdale's. 1945 FDS moved its headquarters to Cincinnati, Ohio. In the coming decades, followed by further acquisitions. In 1990, Federated went bankrupt after the hostile takeover of a competitor. After conversion into a public limited company, the company could be continued in 1992 and took over in December 1994, RH Macy & Co., which were in turn went bankrupt in 1992.
