Madison Historic District (Madison, Indiana)

The Madison Historic District is a historical monument ensemble in Madison, Jefferson County, Indiana. As such, he was declared a National Historic Landmark because of its unique beauty and typical for the Midwest Architecture 2006. Among the prominent buildings within the district include the Lanier Mansion and the Charles L. Shrewsbury House, both of himself as a National Historic Landmark are classified and the Schofield House, considered the birthplace of the Grand Lodge of Freemasons of Indiana. A total of 133 blocks in Madison belong. These are increased over the Ohio River.

The Lanier Mansion was the former home of James Lanier, whose finances it then Governor Oliver P. Morton enabled, the government of Indiana from 1862 to 1865 lead to bypassing the legislative process. The Shrewsbury House was built for the camphor Captain Charles Shrewsbury, who was elected mayor of the city later. Francis Costigan was the architect of the house, which is considered one of the best buildings on a narrow land by a modern architect and his salon is the highlight of the house.

Many of the more famous buildings in the district were built from the born in Madison Costigan. This favored the Neoclassical style.

His best time experienced Madison before 1860. The city was a transportation hub, were transhipped goods transported on ships and transported into the interior of Indiana. As 1835, the Madison & Indianapolis Railroad was built, Madison was much bigger than Indianapolis, the then new capital of the state. The railway line was built primarily by native of Ireland construction workers. When the roads changed, faded splendor of Madison, until a century later, the tourism industry saved the city from further decline.

Madison was also an important station of the Underground Railroad, as the inhabitants of many houses were once involved to help slaves to freedom.

The district was taken from the National Register of Historic Places as a historic monument on May 25, 1973 with the number 73,000,020.
