Magdalena Department

The Departamento del Magdalena is a province in northern Colombia. The Caribbean is limited to the north. To the east lie the provinces of La Guajira and Cesar and west of the departments de Bolívar and Atlántico. The Department of Magdalena bears the name of it passing through the Magdalena River, which is named after Mary Magdalene.

The economy is based on agriculture, with the products of bananas, coffee, rice, tobacco, cotton and Yuca, extensive livestock farming and fishing. The industry plays a subordinate role. However, the province has with Santa Marta an international harbor and extensive tourist centers on the coast with hotels and campgrounds. Magdalena also has oil reserves.

In the Magdalene Park Tayrona, Isla de Salamanca and the beaches of El Rodadero lie.

Geographical feature of the province is the highest coastal mountains in the world, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta ( Pico Cristóbal Colón and Pico Simon Bolivar, each with 5770 m height). There are the two archaeological sites Ciudad Perdida and Pueblito, abandoned cities of the Tairona culture, Kogi, Arhuaco and Asario.
