Life

Magdalena Sibylla, Duchess of Württemberg, was born the daughter of Landgrave Louis VI. of Hesse- Darmstadt and Maria Elisabeth of Holstein- Gottorp in Darmstadt to the world. Even as a child, she lost her mother, and came into the care of her aunt, the Dowager Queen Hedwig Eleonora of Sweden. Here in Stockholm, she received the deeply religious worldview that shaped her life. On the occasion of a visit of the Württemberg Crown Prince Wilhelm Ludwig she became engaged to him. They married on November 6, 1673 in Darmstadt and had the following children:

  • Eleonore Dorothea (1674-1683)
  • Eberhardine Luise (1675-1707)
  • Eberhard Ludwig (1676-1733), Duke of Württemberg
  • Magdalene Wilhelmine (* November 7, 1677, † October 30, 1742 ) - married to Karl Wilhelm of Baden- Durlach

Just six months after the marriage ceremony brought the death of the Duke Eberhard III. her husband, William Louis on the throne of Württemberg, and in 1677 succumbed to a heart attack this. So the only 25 -year-old Magdalena Sibylla saw overnight as reigning Duchess of Württemberg and regent for her minor son Eberhard Ludwig, who was only able to 1693 16- year succeed to the throne.

Through their deep piety and prudence in all decisions they enjoyed great popularity. Your religion is also reflected in the numerous hymns of her hand, many of whom found a firm place in Protestant hymnals. From 1690 to 1692 the composer Johann Pachelbel was in their service. After the accession of the heir, she pulled up to her death on her widow's residence Schloss Kirchheim back.
