Magdalene of Lippe

Magdalene of Lippe (* February 25, 1552 in Detmold, † February 26, 1587 in Darmstadt) was the first country by marriage Countess of Hesse -Darmstadt.

Life

Magdalena was a daughter of Count Bernhard of Lippe VIII (1527-1563) from his marriage to Catherine (1524-1583), daughter of Count Philipp III. of Waldeck -Eisenberg. The Countess had come to her father's death to further education to Kassel to the court of the Landgrave William of Hesse. Here learned the Magdalena regarded as beauty know her future husband. On August 17, 1572, she married in Kassel, the Landgrave George I of Hesse-Darmstadt. William had taken over the cost of the wedding. The marriage was as happy and Magdalene as so virtuous, pious and benevolent, that it was compared to the St. Elizabeth. Magdalena wrote himself a prayer book for their children. She died after 15 years of marriage, after the birth of her last child at the age of 35 years.

Buried in the choir of the city is Magdalena Church of Darmstadt. Here is behind the high altar and the famous epitaph of the Countess, which was dedicated to her in 1589 by her husband. Together with her husband put Magdalena the basis for the Hessian State and University Library.

From their marriage Magdalena had ten children, of whom three sons and three daughters survived to adulthood:
