Magdeburg-Leipzig railway

The railway Magdeburg- Leipzig is a double-track electrified main line in Saxony -Anhalt and Saxony. It runs from Magdeburg via Köthen and Halle ( Saale) to Leipzig.

History

Construction began on January 24, 1838 For the first time in the German railway history was taken into account that the route several countries touched. On 1 June 1876, the Magdeburg- Leipzig Railway Company was connected to the Magdeburg- Halberstadt Railway Company, which was nationalized by the Law of December 20, 1879 by the Kingdom of Prussia. The Magdeburg- Leipzig Railway was placed under the Royal Prussian Railway Directorate Magdeburg. From 1 April 1895 was the section Halle-Leipzig railway of the newly established Directorate hall.

On May 1, 1912, the Prussian part of the Leipzig Central Station, where also ended the Magdeburg route, put into operation.

On 1 April 1920, the Magdeburg- Leipzig Railway went along with the other Prussian state railways to the Reich railways, from which on August 30, 1924 gave rise to the German State Railroad Company.

In 1920, the electrification of the section Halle- Leipzig, which was first sail on 19 December 1922, an electric locomotive began. It was only on October 7, 1934, through electrification of the total distance from Magdeburg to Leipzig was completed.

1946, the electrical installations were dismantled as reparations. After the Soviet Union returned in exchange for car deliveries electric locomotives and equipment, the electric train operation was resumed on September 1, 1955, the Hall - Köthen section. After 1990, the section between Magdeburg and Halle was largely upgraded to a top speed of 160 km / hr. By December 2004, the implementation of the S -Bahn line Halle -Leipzig took place. This was the third and sections built between the main station hall and Gröbers a fourth track for the S-Bahn. Operation

Currently, the section between Magdeburg and Halle is served by a regional train line. It runs every hour and is made up of three double-decker cars with control cars and the electric locomotive class 143. Between Magdeburg and Beautiful (Elbe ) be on the same route, between Central Station and Magdeburg Magdeburg- Buckau on separate tracks, the trains of the S-Bahn line S1. Between Hall and Gröbers the route is used by a regional express line, and partly from the S- Bahn line S 3, which are run as locomotive-hauled double-deck push-pull trains since 2004.

Also long-distance transport route is operated. About the route the IC lines are led 56 and 55, where they hold only at Magdeburg Hbf, Köthen, Halle Hbf, Leipzig / Halle Airport and Leipzig Hbf. Between Gröbers and Leipzig Hbf these trains on the new line Erfurt-Leipzig/Halle. The Intercity trains complement each other in their every two hours on this route to a hour.
