Magnolia Antonino

Magnolia Welborn Antonino (birth name Magnolia Rodriguez Welborn, born December 14, 1915 in Balaoan, province of La Union, † 22 July 2010) was a Filipino entrepreneur, manager and politician, who for several years was a member of the Senate among others.

Life

The Rodriguez as Magnolia Welborn -born first attended public schools in Balaoan and the La Union High School and then the Philippine Normal School and graduated in 1934. After that, she was initially a teacher of home economics in La Union, but was a short time later a teacher at the Upper Elementary School Balaoan. Subsequently, she was 1936-1941 school superintendent for Home Economics for the provinces of Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental. Later she married the businessman Gaudencio Antonino, who for some time was also a senator.

After marriage, she stepped into the operation of her husband, the construction company Antonino Construction Enterprises, and was in this 1946-1953 bookkeeper. Furthermore, it was initially authorized signatory and then manager of the Western Mindanao Lumber Company and Director of Gaudencio E. Antonino Incorporated. In addition, she was also Treasurer of the Polytechnic Colleges of the Philippines, as well as Director of the Philippine Commercial and Instrial Bank and Luzon Cement Corporation.

Mid-1960s they also began a political career and was 1965-1969 Member of the House of Representatives and represented in this first election district of the province of La Union.

After her husband passed away on November 13, 1967, she ran for the Nacionalista Party in its place for a seat in the Senate and was elected. Magnolia Antonino was Senator from 1969 until the dissolution of the Senate following the imposition of martial law by the dictatorial ruling President Ferdinand Marcos on September 21, 1972.

During their membership in the Senate, she was instrumental in laws such as the Law for the fixing of maximum prices for basic goods and raw materials, and creating the Price Monitoring Board ( Republic Act RA 6124 ), the Act on the prohibition of explosive, flammable, corrosive and gfiftigen substances on board passenger aircraft and the regulation of provisions for the transport of such substances on board cargo aircraft (RA 6235 ) and the Act to consolidate and revise the National Energy Company ( RA 6395 ). She also participated in laws to promote women and children as well as for farmers by increasing the rice and cereal production.

Throughout her life, she was active in addition to numerous social and charitable organizations such as the Inner Wheel Club of Manila ( WYCA ), the board of the Girl Scouts of Manila, the Philippine Band of Mercy and the Philippine Garden Club.
