Magnus Blix

Magnus Gustaf Blix ( born December 25, 1849 Säbrå parish, community Härnösand, † February 14, 1904 in Lund ) was a Swedish physiologist and professor from 1885 at Lund University.

Academic Career

Blix in 1869 enrolled at Uppsala University, where he studied medicine. In 1875 he passed the exam candidate and 1879, the licentiate. 1880 closed Blix studying as a medical doctor from, and was appointed in the same year professor of experimental physiology and medical physics in Uppsala. 1882 Blix was appointed ordinarie laborator at the Physiology Department of the University of Uppsala, after he headed the faculty since 1876. 1885 he was appointed professor of physiology and embryology at the University of Lund. In 1888 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina. In 1899 he became rector in Lund and stood in front of the University until his death in 1904.

Work

Blix dealt in particular with the muscle and sensory physiology and could provide important insights in these areas. In his treatise Experimentala bidrag till lösningen af frågan om hudnervernas specifika energi (1883 ) Blix describes his discovery that the perception of cold and heat is carried by different nerves. For this proof Blix received a 1889 award from the Swedish Medical Society.

In his dissertation Oftalmometriska studier (1880 ) describes a Blix by a new principle constructed Ophthalmometer. 1884), the length and tension of the muscle ( Scandinavian archives of Physiology, 1891-95 ), studies on muscle heat ( ibid. 1901) ), Blix explored with the help of new methods, the general physiology of the muscles. 1892 Blix was elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

In addition, Hans Blix constructed a series of physiological instruments and apparatus, including a muscle indicator, in addition to the documents mentioned in the treatise New registration apparatus ( Pflügers Archive 1902) are described. With an apparatus for measuring the heat production of muscle contraction, he created the basis for the later work of Archibald Vivian Hill in this area.

The physician colleagues and Professor Carl Magnus Prince (1854-1935) Blix met during his lifetime an agreement. The survivor of the two should investigate the brain after the death of the other. After the death of Hans Blix 1904 by Carl Magnus Prince Scripture Professorn i vid Lunds Universitet fysiologi Magnus Blix's hjärna ( Gleerup 1918, inter alia, 30, IV, p. Ill. Lunds Universitets Årsskrift. Avd 2, including medicine matematiska och naturvetenskapliga. ämnen; . NF, 14.3 ) and presented his studies. The brain of Hans Blix was preserved and handed over to the University of Lund where it is still located today.

Magnus Blix was the son of Pastor Carl Johan Blix and Christina Österholm and is descended from the ancient family of the Blix Jämtland. From marriage to Martina Lamb 1890 went a son with Gunnar Blix ( 1894-1981 ). The Swedish politician Hans Blix ( born 1928 ) is his grandson.
