Mago Island

Mago, mango, is a volcanic island that lies to the north of belonging to Fiji Lau Islands. The 22 km ² island is one of the largest private islands of the Pacific. The island is approximately 20 km south-west of Vanua Balavu to which most of the original inhabitants were expelled during the nineteenth century, 15 km south of Kanacea as well as 24 km northeast of Cicia. The island reaches a height of 204 meters above the sea.

History

Mid-nineteenth century on the island created a cotton plantation and expelled the resident Melanesian population. 1884 was grown on Mago with the help of Indian workers and sugarcane processed in a mill, but was dismantled in 1895 to supplement a larger mill on a neighboring island. After also sugar cane cultivation became unprofitable, the new owners of the island began with the production of copra, which should prove to be a long-term profitable. So the owners family Borron of the Government of Fiji gave a hotel in Suva, which is now used as a guest house for state visitors.

Today

In 2005, the island from the Hollywood star Mel Gibson by the Japanese transport company Tōkyō kyuko Dentetsu was purchased. Today, agriculture is run by the few still living Fiji Indians only to a small extent.

On the island there is a small, unpaved airfield with a 1100 -meter-long airstrip.
