Mahalia Jackson

Mahalia Jackson ( born October 26, 1911 in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, † January 27, 1972 in Evergreen Park near Chicago, Illinois, USA) was an American gospel singer.

Life and career

Mahalia Jackson grew up in New Orleans, where she sang first in a Baptist church. In 1928 she moved to Chicago to perform with the Johnson Brothers, one of the earliest professional gospel groups.

After the Johnson Brothers had dissolved the mid-1930s, Jackson took in 1937 on Decca Records God's Gonna Separate The Wheat From The Tares, My Lord, Keep Me Everyday and God Shall Wipe All Tears Away. The recordings were moderately successful, but Jackson was a popular concert singer.

She made a recording break until 1946, when she completed a contract with Apollo Records and released several singles, which at that time also sold poorly. Move on up a Little Higher ( 1948) was, however, a huge success, the shops were able to satisfy the strong demand hardly. Jackson was famous both in the U.S. and soon after in Europe. I Can Put My Trust in Jesus (1952 ) won a prize from the French Academy, while Silent Night in Norway, the best-selling single was.

She received a radio series on CBS in 1954 and closed a contract with Columbia Records. In the years 1952, 1961, 1964, 1967, 1968 and 1971, she carried out extensive tours all over the world. On German television, she appeared in 1967 in a Euro Vision mission at the start of color TV with other international stars on. Furthermore, she appeared in films such as St. Louis Blues, Imitation of Life and The Best Man.

The Jacksons career was the late 1950s and early 1960s, continues to be successful. She made recordings with Duke Ellington (Black, Brown and Beige ) and Percy Faith and performed in 1957 and 1958 at the Newport Jazz Festival, which was recorded and broadcast by the Voice of America. In the final scene of Douglas Sirk's movie Imitation of Life, she sang Trouble of the world. Jackson also sang at the inauguration of John F. Kennedy in 1960, when Martin Luther King's "March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom " and later at King's funeral.

In the late 1960s she lost in strength and popularity. She finished her international career in 1971 with a concert in Munich and died in 1972 at age 60 after several heart attacks.
