Mahmud Pasha Angelovic

Mahmud Pasha called Veli Mahmud Pasha, (* in Novo Brdo in eastern Kosovo, according to other sources in Alaca Hisar, today Krusevac in Serbia, † July 18, 1474 in Constantine Opel ) was in the years 1456-1468 and 1472-1474 Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II

Career

Mahmud was born the son of Christian parents. He received his education in the palace in Edirne, where he began his political career after the enthronement of Mehmed II. With this he was involved as Agha a Janissary corps in the conquest of Constantinople Opel and was then appointed in 1456 to the Grand Vizier and a short time later to Beylerbey. As grand vizier he was involved in campaigns of Sultan 1456-58 against Serbia, 1460/61 against Sinope and Trebizond. The conquest of the latter is considered his merit. In 1462 he was involved in the campaign against Vlad Dracul in Wallachia, as a fleet commander he conquered Lesbos and drove the Venetians from the Isthmus of Corinth. As in 1462 during the attack on the Karamanoğlu whose rulers Ishak Bey escaped, Mahmud Pasha was relieved of his Großwesiramtes. After some time as governor of the Sanjak of Gallipoli, he was again in 1472 Grand Vizier, to assist the Sultan in the battle against Uzun Hasan, the ruler of the Turkmen Aq Qoyunlu. After intrigues of the second vizier Rum Mehmed Pasha him a lack of zeal in the pursuit of refugees was accused, after which he was released in the same year again. He sat down near Edirne to rest. When he was returned to the funeral of Prince Mustafa in the capital arrested on slander towards imprisoned in the fortress Yedikule 1474 and executed.

Services

Mahmud Pasha is now known as the owner of Mahmutpasa Mosque in Istanbul, where he is buried. Also, a madrasah and a school were built on his behalf, as well as the covered bazaar Mahmut Paşa Bedesteni in Ankara, in which the museum is housed for Anatolian Civilizations today. Even as a supporter of writers and scientists, he stepped forward and was even poetic works, although it is not clear whether the name ʿ ʿ Adli or Adani assigned it.
