Mahone Bay (town)

Mahone Bay is a city in Nova Scotia, Canada. It is located on the western shore of the bay of the same in Lunenburg County.

History

The first settlers arrived in 1754 by the nearby town of Lunenburg, which was founded a year earlier. Among them were mainly immigrants from Germany, Switzerland and from Montbéliard. Even today, living descendants of the first families, with names like Hyson, Pinch, Keddy, Eisenhauer / Eisner, Christmas / Whynot, Ernst and Veinot in the city. In the old cemetery Bayview Cemetery grave stones are from the 18th century with German inscription. The city rights were granted Mahone Bay in 1919.

Economy

The boat building was a long time after the founding of the city 's most important economic sector. Today, only the " Settler's Museum " and the annual in August Mahone Bay Classic Boat Festival of times past. As in many cities and towns of Nova Scotia tourism has become the main source of income.
